Korean Economy - IT Players to Invest in Island Hub
October 20, 2004
Six large international technology firms, including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun Microsystems, plan to participate in a new city project being constructed on an island in the Yellow Sea off Incheon in South Korea. The companies recently signed an agreement with the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority to invest in a digital entertainment cluster district within the city of Songdo. Songdo is part of a Korean government plan to create a leading hub of international finance, trade, and logistics.

The technology players will participate in a consortium along with Korean companies KT and LGCNS. The exact scale of investment for each company will be decided within the next five months. Microsoft is expected to provide software, while Sun Microsystems and HP will provide IT equipment in place of capital.
